Some time ago "The View" host Sherri Shepherd covered and issue of "Precious Times" magazine. At the time I did not cover the story or write anything about Sherri being on the cover or the number of personal things she revealed about herself in the eight-page feature story, yes eight pages, in the Christians women's lifestyle publication. However, it was not until I met the 31-year-ould comedienne in person that I understood her better and her point of view. In the article she talked about her revelations about her faith, her conversion from being a Jehovah's Witness to Christianity. Prior to her conversion she was a Witness, but in 1993 her mother was dying from diabetic complications and her sister was heavy into drugs, which they would have to go and get from crack houses. In addition, she was in a very physically abusive relationship. Sherri shared how she was sleeping with a lot of men and had more abortions than she could count due to her very low self-esteem. The Chicago-native, was embroiled in a divorce and custody battle with her ex-husband Jeffrey Tarpley, explained a great deal to me about the positions she would take on the show. Many times I found myself screaming at the television when Sherri would speak on various issues. Often I thought she was an embarrassment to African American Women and was a poor choice. However, earlier this year I met her during the Trumpet Award weekend of activities during my interview I address a number of my issues with Sherri and found that she was one of the most honest and genuine people. The co-host truly speaks from her experience and is not putting on an act as I originally thought. Sherri Shepherd has grown to be and inspiration to me and other with her example of where you start is not where you have to finish and that you do not have to have the prefect education or background to have a seat at the table.
